If you are a California resident, you have the right to tell us not to sell or share your personal information. California law defines “sale” and “sharing” broadly: they cover more than exchanging information for money, and can include disclosing information to another company for advertising purposes. This page explains where that applies at Petkey, and how to tell us to stop.
You do not have to have an account to make this request, we will not charge you for it, and we will not treat you differently for making it.
What this coversThere are two things we do that may count as a sale or sharing of personal information under California law:
Pet insurance quotes. If you ask for a pet insurance quote through our Site, we pass your request to our insurance partner so they can quote you. That referral is how the quote is produced, and we may be compensated for it.
Advertising and analytics partners. We work with advertising and analytics providers who receive information about how our Site is used, including identifiers associated with your browser or device. This is the more common case, and it is the one most people are thinking of when they opt out.
What this does not coverOpting out does not stop us using or disclosing your information where it is needed to run the service you have asked us for. In particular, it does not stop:
Disclosures needed to return a lost pet. This is the point of the service. If your pet is found, or their microchip is scanned, we will share the contact information needed to reunite you with them — with the person who found your pet, a veterinary practice, a shelter, or a recovery partner. Opting out does not switch this off, and asking us to stop it would defeat the reason your pet is registered.
Service providers acting for us. We use other companies to do things on our behalf, such as processing payments, sending email and text messages, shipping tags, and hosting the Site. They may only use your information to do that work for us. Under California law this is not a sale or sharing, and it is not affected by an opt-out.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
How to submit a requestEmail privacy@petkey.org and tell us you want to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information.
So that we can find your records and be sure the request is really from you, please send your request from the email address on your Petkey account if you have one, and include the name of your pet or your microchip number if you know it. If we cannot verify who you are, we may not be able to act on the request.
You may also use an authorised agent to make a request for you. We may ask the agent for proof that you gave them permission, and we may still ask you to verify your own identity directly.
